I write this a few days after the March 3, 2026 full lunar eclipse. It inspired me to seek out OTHER MOON PHOTOS to show you. starting with one of the 2022 complete lunar eclipse, below.
Preparation for the March 2026 eclipse
Yes, experiencing and photographing my first eclipses of moon in 2021 and 2022. was very exciting.
But the eclipse of March 2026 was special.
I was prepared for this full eclipse that created a Blood Moon.. I attended a Zoom workshop on photographing the moon, and the eclipse in particular. About 70 of us learned tons from an OM System expert, Peter Baumgarten. You should see his photos— amazing! (I can't embed the link, but you can copy and paste it into your browser— https://learnandsupport.getolympus.com/om-system-ambassadors/peter-baumgarten
After that Zoom workshop I felt I had to capture moon and landscape at once! Only one of the images here is evidence, but the thrill remains. Is it contagious?
Blood Moon, 2022
My first attempts to "shoot the moon" (shoot photographs, that is– not playing cards) came in May 2022.
Not bad for a first time, right?
Where to see this photo and others like it
The images you see from the Blood Moon above to Moonrise Before Dawn photograph below live in my Cosmos gallery. Those image files are larger, high resolution versions of those in this post.
Moon During Eclipse, 2026
As much as I loved the photo of just the 2022 moon, I was determined to capture the eclipsing moon OVER LANDSCAPE.
Despite looking like a normal moon, setting in a normal way, this moon was mostly obscured in the shadow of the earth.
I took the photo from Lake Mary Road, not far from Flagstaff, Arizona, 3/3/26.
Hi there!
Setting Moon In Southeast Alaska
This black and white rendering of a half moon setting offers a glimpse of the rugged landscapes of Alaska's Inside Passage. I took the photo from a moving ship— the Chichagof Dream, a small cruise ship in August 2025.
Hi there!
Moon in Clouds, December 2022
In the hour before dawn on a wintry December morning (12/13/ 2024), I captured the moon setting through fascinating clouds forming cross-cutting patterns over Highway 180 in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Moonrise Before Dawn, 12/17/25
A thin crescent shines amid colorful dawn clouds, adjacent to the dark portions of the moon. The photograph was taken in Cheshire neighborhood, Flagstaff Arizona.
A continuum of moons
For the lunar eclipses in 2021 and 2022 I stayed at home with cameras and tripods.
This image reminds me of a toy I had as a child in the early 1960's called a Slinky. You could also see a resemblance to a leaning stack of copper pennies.
The effect resulted from bumping the tripod— not violently but enough to change the vision we see here.
This photo is available in my Composites and Digital Art gallery. Digital art indeed.
Not the moon seen by the eye
This image had no natural birth. Instead, as I edited one of my 2026 eclipse photos.
As I edited a photo shot near Lake Mary in northern Arizona in Topaz Photo AI, quite by accident I created this. I love the halo of stars. It is no more natural than the other facets of the image.
Diamonds have facets too!
This photo is available along with other equally creative images in my Composites and Digital Art gallery.
Inspired by the lunar eclipse, sharing it with you
I have been anxious to share my experience with you— getting out of bed at 2:30 a.m. and driving from our Flagstaff home to Lake Mary, about a half hour from here. I was breathless (and cold) throughout my three hour photo shoot!
But In the end I am equally excited to revisit my older photos, and to see what I could do to make those images more interesting than I could have imagined. I am speaking of the last two in particular.
Stay tuned. More blog posts are coming!
