Birds of the American West are remarkably diverse, and many are quite distinct from their eastern counterparts. From raptors riding thermals to small birds flashing through wetlands and forests, the West offers endless opportunities to observe avian life shaped by vast spaces, altitude, weather, and light.
Radiating outward from Northern Arizona—to the north, south, east, and west—travel, timing, and patience are richly rewarded. Magnificent raptors, perched or in flight, are particularly inspiring, but every photograph here seeks to capture not just appearance, but behavior: the spirit and dynamism of wild birds moving through their environments.
Some images focus on subtle moments—the angle of a posture, the cock of a head, the half-closing of an eye. Others capture motion at its peak: birds lifting into flight, diving, or maneuvering at speed. These moments demand preparation—lens at the ready, camera settings tuned, and attention fully engaged.
Whether feathers and beaks are bold or understated, each bird offers its own sense of wonder. Together, these photographs reflect both motion and stillness, drama and quiet, across a wide range of species and habitats.
